If you’re jumping in the car and heading into paid-parking territory on the coast, watch out for a rise in hourly rates. Apparently fees are set to rise by as much as 67% – Burleigh Heads and Bundall being hit the hardest. Surfers Paradise are the next step down with Southport not far behind.
Businesses are concerned about how the parking fee hike is going to affect them, complaining that the 67% rise isn’t in line with the inflation rate and will only serve to drive customers away. The council has hit back with a statement, saying that parking in the Gold Coast was still some of the cheapest in Australia and that residents and businesses shouldn’t complain.
Parking costs are now going to be anywhere between $1 to $2.10 an hour.
What do you think? Are the parking rate rises a matter of extortion or are they within acceptable limits?
