The thought of home-renovation could seem quite daunting to some home-owners, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. Many have survived renovating with quite minimal stress to their sanity and their bank balance – however it is important that you prepare adequately to get the most from your labours.
Start by creating a realistic plan with a schedule of every task that needs to be undertaken. Don’t forget your family’s comfort is still important – if a certain room needs more time to work on – allot spare rooms for them to live in until the renovation is complete.
Make decisions BEFORE you renovate. Choose all of the equipment, fittings and colours before you begin so the job won’t be held up if you don’t have something on-hand. Major changes only lengthen the process and increase expense!
Seek professional help if need be. Even if you have decided to renovate by yourself, you can still consult a renovation contractor for tips. If you end up doing more than necessary – you run the risk of spending more.
Let your neighbours know your plans to lessen the chance of future disputes over noise issues. A plate of cupcakes or an invitation post-renovation party won’t go astray. Remember – there’s a better chance that they’ll be cooperative if you take on a positive attitude!
Time is ticking away! Avoid making major renovations if you are planning to start a job, or have a major holiday planned during remodelling or renovations. Having said that – if there is a place to send the kids occasionally – it will definitely work in your favour. Dust and rubble can cause health hazards, particularly in youngsters and it will give them (and you) a break from living together in a potentially stressful environment.
