There’s no denying that Paradise Point mornings are becoming a little chillier as Autumn turns into Winter. It’s been a nice change from the humid Summer we have just experienced, however the colder weather always brings about a higher risk of fires in the home.

Here are some ways to keep your family stay safe this Winter:

• Ensure that your home has working smoke alarms.
• Have a fire-escape plan in place and ensure that the entire family is aware of it.
• Never leave heaters or open fires burning when you leave the house or go to bed, or let children stand or sleep too close to them.
• Install guards around open fires.
• Watch out too for electrical cords – don’t let them cross the front of heating appliances or hide them under rugs.
• Ensure that you keep clothing, linen, and other combustible materials at least a metre away from heaters.
• Switch off your electric blanket before you go to sleep

It’s important to be vigilant, especially whilst using heaters or any kind of heating element. Check your appliances before you use them each Winter – particularly if you haven’t used them in a year. Faulty equipment is often the culprit in tragedies that inevitably top the news come Winter time and can be easily avoided.

People find themselves living in small environments for a myriad of reasons nowadays – downsizing, or simply buying their first property – the size of which meets their budget. However there is no need to despair that you have less living space – it’s a great way to simplify your life and reduce overhead costs. There’s no need however to cram your life into less space. Here are some tips to help you succeed in the quest for smaller-scale living.

	1. Under-shelf storage space. When implemented correctly – you can make the most of the space you have by hanging items underneath every available shelf. Everything from coffee mugs to shampoo bottles in the bathroom.
2. Closet organizers. There are so many of these on the market now that provide ways to make the most of your closet space. Pick some that work with your space and your budget – take a trip up to Ikea at Slacks Creek for some inspiration.
3. Ceiling Racks. Not just for kitchens! Ceiling storage is perfect not just for pots and pans in the kitchen, but for garages too. Perfect for those rooms where you need to store bits and pieces that won’t go anywhere else – tools, holiday decorations etc.
4. Go Vertical. Almost anything can be stored on the wall with peg boards, clever spice racks and other contraptions designed to keep your bits and pieces off the floor. Everything from wine bottles to coffee mugs to CDs can be stored within arm’s reach.
5. Like In, Like Out. If a new item comes into the house – replace another item with the same functionality. You don’t have to throw it out – give it to a friend, or to charity. This will help you to avoid over-clutter and re-downsizing down the track.
6. Under the Bed. Such a prime space that is often underused! Before you buy a storage system for under the bed however, don’t forget to measure it before you set out! It’s not going to be very space-efficient if your brand new storage boxes don’t actually fit under the bed!
7. Double-Store It. How many other sneaky ways can you store your bits and pieces? Secret-compartments can be found everywhere – from lift-up seats in chairs and couches to space under coffee tables. Sneaky!
8. Corner Organisation. There are corner organizers for everything nowadays! TV units, kids storage – even smaller corner storage units for cupboards and the shower! Corners are a goldmine when it comes to maximum space-efficiency.

There you have it – eight ways to save on space without going completely crazy! It does require some forward planning and a little bit of ongoing organisation – but it is perfectly possible! Need some inspiration? Check out this article on Japanese Micro-Homes. Now there’s some seriously compact living!

If you’re jumping in the car and heading into paid-parking territory on the coast, watch out for a rise in hourly rates. Apparently fees are set to rise by as much as 67% – Burleigh Heads and Bundall being hit the hardest. Surfers Paradise are the next step down with Southport not far behind.

Businesses are concerned about how the parking fee hike is going to affect them, complaining that the 67% rise isn’t in line with the inflation rate and will only serve to drive customers away. The council has hit back with a statement, saying that parking in the Gold Coast was still some of the cheapest in Australia and that residents and businesses shouldn’t complain.

Parking costs are now going to be anywhere between $1 to $2.10 an hour.

What do you think? Are the parking rate rises a matter of extortion or are they within acceptable limits?

Ever walked through an open-home and immediately felt that you belonged there? You saw yourself curling up in front of the TV (even though it wasn’t yours), or cooking up a storm in the kitchen (even though you’ve only just walked in the door…)? What is it that makes a home that’s open to the scrutiny of future buyers so irresistible? Chances are – a great deal of thought and creativity has been put into the half-hour or so that you’ll be spending there. Want to recreate that energy for your next-open home? Look no further!

like you would dress appropriately for a particular function – so should you dress your home appropriately for an open-home inspection. Create a “homely” environment using elements as food, ambient music, and scented candles. Buy fruit for that empty fruit bowl, or cakes for the cake-stand. A recipe book open neatly in the kitchen, even the spa running (inside or outside) are all ideas to entice and capture the imaginations of future buyers.

Not the most environmentally sound idea – but turning on all of the lights, particularly on a less-than bright time of day adds warmth.

Add life to your property by strategically placing plants around the house.

Buy new towels and lay them out only during open times. Keep your laundry baskets neat and tidy.

Prepare the correct temperature – if it is a hot day, ensure that fans or air-conditioners are turned on. If it is cold – light the fire, and turn on the heaters.

Furniture not up to scratch? Consider buying key pieces from eBay – or possibly even hiring from professional home-decor companies. Remember – you only get one chance to make a first impression!

Lay that turf that you’ve been meaning to lay for ages. Plant that vegetable patch. Create that kids play-area – sandpit, cubby house – the works.

Don’t forget that the time and effort spent preparing a home for inspection has a large impact on a prospective buyer. It’s all about perception and if people can “see” themselves living in your home – you are 90% of the way there.

The thought of home-renovation could seem quite daunting to some home-owners, but it doesn’t always have to be that way. Many have survived renovating with quite minimal stress to their sanity and their bank balance – however it is important that you prepare adequately to get the most from your labours.

Start by creating a realistic plan with a schedule of every task that needs to be undertaken. Don’t forget your family’s comfort is still important – if a certain room needs more time to work on – allot spare rooms for them to live in until the renovation is complete.

Make decisions BEFORE you renovate. Choose all of the equipment, fittings and colours before you begin so the job won’t be held up if you don’t have something on-hand. Major changes only lengthen the process and increase expense!

Seek professional help if need be. Even if you have decided to renovate by yourself, you can still consult a renovation contractor for tips. If you end up doing more than necessary – you run the risk of spending more.

Let your neighbours know your plans to lessen the chance of future disputes over noise issues. A plate of cupcakes or an invitation post-renovation party won’t go astray. Remember – there’s a better chance that they’ll be cooperative if you take on a positive attitude!

Time is ticking away! Avoid making major renovations if you are planning to start a job, or have a major holiday planned during remodelling or renovations. Having said that – if there is a place to send the kids occasionally – it will definitely work in your favour. Dust and rubble can cause health hazards, particularly in youngsters and it will give them (and you) a break from living together in a potentially stressful environment.

What tips do you have for “surviving” a major renovation project? Share your stories below.

If you’ve been following the news recently, you would have seen Premier Anna Bligh’s decision to break away from her government’s opposition to a “much-needed” crime squad to be stationed on the Gold Coast following a spate of unsolved robberies over the past year. There is much debate about the validity of such a force, and I’m not going to discuss the pros and cons of both sides today.

However something that I am interested in, is home-security and the safety of the residents in the Gold Coast and surround. The Easter holidays may have been and gone, however there are public holidays still upon us (not to mention the June school vacation period which will be here before you know it). It is a time where many Gold Coast residents head out for that well deserved Winter-getaway, leaving their homes unattended for several nights. And whilst yes, in some cases, home invasion can still happen – no matter how many security screens, lights and cameras we have installed – here are a few tips to remove the “welcome mat”, so to speak, for unwanted visitors.

This might seem like a no-brainer, but check and double check that you have locked any windows sporting individual locks. Many people get into a very bad habit of just swinging the window closed, however while it may be enough to keep the rain out – it won’t keep out people who want to come in.

Let your neighbour know that you’re going to be away – and leave a contact number. If you are on especially good terms with them, ask if they can even collect your mail. Even better – ask them to park their car on your property in your absence.

If you’re going away for more than a few days – get your mail held by Australia Post and postpone any newspaper deliveries and turn down the volume of your telephone – particularly if it can be often heard on the outside of your property.

Install automatic timer devices for your television and particular lights in the house. Nothing screams “we’re not home” like a darkened residence at 7pm. Ensure that you engage manual locks on your electric garage door and although it may seem like common sense – obviously leaving keys on or around your property is an open invitation.

Lock away ladders, tools or other items that could be used as potential “break-in” equipment. The same applies to empty boxes or similar containers alongside bins for rubbish collection. It is amazing how many times houses have been cleaned out and no-one noticed because it was simply assumed that the residents were “moving”.

Do you have any tips to add to the list, or stories of easily-avoidable robberies? Leave them below. In the meantime, check out the Australian Neighbourhood Watch website and take a “virtual tour” to help you ‘audit’ your home security efforts. You’ll be surprised at the little things that contribute to keeping your home safe.

Queensland has seen its fair share of rain this year - and even as we herald the arrival of Autumn, we are still needlessly losing loved ones in flooded conditions. Queensland Police are still issuing warnings and reminders about the dangers of driving through floodwaters after three men and a nine year old boy required rescuing in two separate incidents in South-East QLD last week. Conditions may look safe, however flooded causeways and bridges can be extremely unpredictable as they rise and fall so quickly, rapidly inundating vehicles and often occupants that are trapped inside.

	Remember:

Don’t drive, ride, walk or swim through or in flooded waters.

 Obey road closure signs

 Travel with extreme caution

If in doubt – stay out.

Queensland has seen enough flood-related tragedies this year to last a lifetime. Nothing is that important that there is a need to enter flood-waters. Keep yourselves and your loved ones safe.

Should speed camera revenue be put back into educating young drivers? According to a survey conducted by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) – the answer is yes. A staggering 87% of members support any initiative that keeps the roads safe and reducing the road toll that always rises, particularly around school holiday time.

A strategic solution would be to introduce pre-licence driver education programs in Queensland schools – funded partially by safety and speed cameras. Andrew Papadopoulous from CAMS is advocating a program that especially discourages P platers from being distracted by smoking, mobile phones, music and pets.

Meanwhile Gold Coast police had a busy start to Easter who in the space of 24 hours intercepted 300 motorists driving over the speed limit.

What do you think? Should speed-camera revenue be put back into the re-education of pre-licensed teens? Will it make a difference?
